Scholarship Information: The Hoke Smith Memorial
Foundation
Scholarship The Hoke Smith Memorial Foundation
Scholarship is for freshmen men and women interested in careers in Cooperative
Extension work, or as a teacher of Agriculture Education or Family and Consumer
Sciences. The scholarship will be awarded for two academic semesters, payable
each term. The scholarship honors the memory of Hoke Smith, Governor of Georgia
and Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee at the time of passage of the
Smith-Lever Act of 1914 and the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917. Hoke Smith was a
dedicated public servant. As a U.S. Senator and Governor of the State of
Georgia, he made outstanding contributions to improving the well-being of rural
people everywhere.
Applications
must be postmarked no later than April 2, 2010.
Eligibility Guidelines:
Residents of Georgia who have
applied for admission as freshmen to any unit of the University System of
Georgia may apply for the Hoke Smith Memorial Foundation Scholarship. Applicants
should rank in the upper one third of their high school class and must have an
interest in a career in Cooperative Extension work, or as a teacher of
Agriculture Education or a teacher of Family and Consumer
Sciences.
To apply for the Hoke Smith Memorial
Foundation Scholarship, complete the application form and submit it, along with
a one-page resume (resumes of more than one page will not be accepted), an
official copy of a high school transcript, and letters of recommendation from
two responsible persons in the community. Also, include a statement not
exceeding 200 words, explaining why applicant wants to become an Extension
agent, or Vocational Agriculture or Family and Consumer Sciences teacher. Please
